17-year-old student shot and killed in overnight Madison shooting
Officials say a car drove by and shot at a crowd of people outside following a party
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A 17-year-old Madison Metropolitan School District high school student was shot and killed Saturday night following a drive-by shooting, according to the Madison Police Dept.
At around 11:50 p.m., MPD officers were sent to the 10 block of Lathrop St., which is near UW Madison’s campus and Camp Randall Stadium, for reports of shots fired. Authorities found multiple bullet casings in the street. Police later learned an injured teen went to a local hospital, where he later died.
According to a MPD press conference Sunday afternoon, the student was attending a party when a car drove by and shot at the crowd he was standing in outside the residence.
“We have previously been called to the party address for noise complaints, and complaints of party, but not for acts of violence,” MPD Assistant Chief Paige Valenta said. “It is not acceptable for a 17-year-old to lose their life to gun violence.”
Officials say witnesses to the incident reported approximately 100 people were in the area prior to shots being fired. It is now known at this time whether the victim was the intended target. No other injuries have been reported, and no suspect or suspects have been identified.
“If you attended the party, know someone who did, or have video of the party or events surrounding the party, please reach out to Madison detectives, we want to talk to you,” Assistant Chief Valenta said.
The shooting comes the same weekend countless UW-Madison students are moving into nearby apartments for the upcoming school year. UW-Madison Junior Libby Inkmann said she could see police lights outside from her bedroom Saturday night, and heard commotion at the party.
“I thought it was a car backfiring or maybe fireworks,” she said.
Parents helping to move their students in, such as Linda Boyd, said she hopes it is an isolated incident.
“You always worry about your child that they are safe, and they live in a city where these things are happening more frequently and you just pray that it never happens to anyone around you,” she said.
While many residences in the area where the shooting occurred are student rentals, MPD would not confirm the exact address or who lived there.
MPD’s Violent Crime Unit is currently investigating the incident. If anyone has any information, please contact MPD at (608) 255-2345 or Madison Area CrimeStoppers at (608) 266-6014.
