BBB recommends people keep careful track of subscription services

With so many services, it is easy to lose track and end up paying for things you don’t use.

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - With more people using subscription services for everything from movies to meals, the Better Business Bureau is reminding people to keep track of what they are paying for. There a lot of services available, and it is easy to lose track and keep paying for something you are not using.

The BBB recommends reviewing all your subscriptions every three to six months. There are also several apps people can use to track their subscriptions automatically, but these apps will typically require bank account or credit card information.

“What are you using, what are you not using? Cancel those that you’re not using,” said Tiffany Schultz with the BBB in Wisconsin.

Shultz said it is also important to read the fine print when signing up for a subscription service. This is especially important if you are signing up for a free trial period.

“You need to know when your free trial is going to end and how much it’s going to charge you. People get caught in that trap all the time,” Schultz explained.

When signing up for a subscription service, it is also important to know how to cancel it if you decide you no longer need it. Some services are easy and have an option online or require just email to the company, but that is not always the case.

“Before you go ahead and sign up, there’s always going to be that information in the fine print about how you go about and cancel,” Shultz said.

She added, don’t be afraid to cancel early.

“Go ahead and cancel, even before you get to that renewal date, there’s nothing wrong with cancelling because you’re going to be able to enjoy the product through your contracted date anyways,” she explained.

The BBB is also warning about subscription service scams. If information about how to cancel is not easy to find, or there is not a clear way to get in contact with a company, the service might not be legitimate.
